NZ SCI Registry Report Released

The New Zealand Spinal Cord Injury (SCI) Registry has released its much-anticipated 2022 data, shedding light on the landscape of spinal cord injuries across the country. Among the key findings, the report reveals that in 2022, 95 individuals were admitted to the Burwood Spinal Unit due to spinal cord injuries resulting in tetraplegia or paraplegia.

This data underscores the critical role of specialised facilities like the Burwood Spinal Unit in providing essential care and rehabilitation to individuals navigating life-altering injuries. However, behind these statistics lies a story of transformation and empowerment, made possible by the visionary legacy of Mr. Cyril Smith.

In 2020, Māia spearheaded a significant upgrade to the Burwood facility, aimed at enhancing the quality of care and comfort for patients undergoing rehabilitation. Through the generous legacy left by Mr. Cyril Smith, Māia was able to implement a range of improvements, tailored to meet the unique needs of spinal cord injury patients.

These upgrades included the installation of ceiling hoists extending to the bathroom, ensuring safe and efficient mobility for patients. Additionally, TV arms over the beds were installed, providing entertainment and connectivity during recovery periods. The introduction of computer rooms equipped patients with resources for learning and leisure, while a dedicated whānau room offered a space for families to come together and support their loved ones.

Moreover, the upgrades addressed practical considerations, such as additional storage spaces and improved working areas for the dedicated staff at the Burwood Spinal Unit. These enhancements not only improved the overall patient experience but also streamlined operations, enabling staff to deliver high-quality care with greater efficiency.

The impact of these upgrades has been profound, facilitating a holistic approach to rehabilitation and empowering patients on their journey to recovery. Mr. Cyril Smith's legacy has left an indelible mark on the Burwood Spinal Unit, making a significant difference in the lives of countless individuals and their families.
