Waipapa Christchurch Hospital's Helipad Celebrates 2990 Landings, Saving Lives and Time

The significance of Waipapa Christchurch Hospital's rooftop helipad was once again underscored last year during a critical medical emergency. As a patient went into cardiac arrest while the rescue helicopter was coming in to land, the helipad's importance in providing swift access to life-saving care became evident.

"We were able to get the patient downstairs and straight into resus in less than five minutes," highlights Garden City Aviation Flight Crew Manager Rick Knight. "That's a huge difference from where we were before the helipad, landing at Hagley Park, and it taking an average of 13 minutes to get to the hospital by road ambulance."

From November 16, 2020, to October 31, 2023, the rooftop helipad at Waipapa Christchurch Hospital facilitated a remarkable 2990 landings. These landings represent not just numbers, but critical moments where lives were saved, and timely medical care was delivered to those in need.

The success and impact of the helipad wouldn't have been possible without the incredible support of the community. Through the efforts of the Māia Health Foundation, an impressive $2 million was raised to enhance and future-proof the helipad, ensuring its continued effectiveness in providing rapid access to medical care.

The upgraded helipad has not only streamlined emergency medical response but has also significantly reduced the time it takes to transport critically ill patients to the hospital. This efficiency is crucial in situations where every minute counts and can make the difference between life and death.

As Waipapa Christchurch Hospital celebrates this milestone, it extends its gratitude to the community for its unwavering support and partnership in advancing healthcare excellence. Join us in celebrating this achievement and continuing to support healthcare excellence in our community.
