Why is the new facility needed?

121% increased demand

400 young people each month

72 emergencies each month

  • In recent years, the demand for Child, Adolescent, and Family* (CAF) services in Canterbury has risen alarmingly by 121%. Every month, an average of 400 young people seek help through referrals, adding to the existing caseload. Additionally, the service receives an average of 72 emergency presentations per month, with the youngest referred child being just 2 years old. These statistics paint a clear and troubling picture of the challenges our youth face in accessing the critical care they urgently require.

Our current outpatient facilities, based primarily at Princess Margaret and Hillmorton Hospital sites, are far from that. They are old, outdated, and broken. Young people themselves say they feel like they are entering a prison.

That’s why Māia’s current major project is to help create a modern Child, Adolescent and Family outpatient facility - Kahurangi. Kahurangi will be a state-of-the-art, purpose-designed sanctuary for our young people to receive mental health outpatient treatment. It will be light, bright, and welcoming.

The estimated cost of this vital project is $15 million, and Māia Health Foundation has committed to raising $6 million to ensure that the facility is of the highest quality, elevating the healthcare system in the South Island.

With your support, we can create a safe and nurturing environment where our young ones can receive the mental health treatment they need to thrive.

*Child, Adolescent and Family Community Services (CAF) is an outpatient service providing comprehensive psychiatric assessment and therapeutic intervention for children and adolescents 0-17 years (or older if still at school) in their family context.

The new facility will include:

  • Dedicated outpatient physio treatment space

  • Sensorised environment and sensory room

  • State-of-the-art observation spaces for assessments, play, and family therapies

  • Separate, private entrance for emergency presentations

  • Specialty rooms for child psychotherapy

  • Purpose build clinic rooms for physical needs

  • Spacious group therapy rooms

  • Welcoming and culturally safe whanau room

  • Extensive outdoor landscaping with therapeutic interaction options
